What does it mean to set boundaries?
Boundaries are the limits we set to protect ourselves from being taken advantage of, manipulated, or hurt. They help us to assert our needs and maintain our personal space and integrity. When we have healthy boundaries, we can say "no" without feeling guilty or anxious. We can also be asserted as an act of kindness. Believe it or not, your need to set boundaries to maintain a relationship or keep someone in your life is an act of kindness.
What does it mean to be assertive?
Assertiveness is the ability to express our needs and wants in a way that is respectful of ourselves and others. It is the ability to speak up for ourselves while also considering the needs of others. Assertiveness is not aggression; it is assertive communication. Know the difference. To be assertive means to set boundaries and express needs with respect. Aggression means to do this absent respect.
