Health coaching is effective. Should you try it?

Health coaching may be your solution if you want to improve your health and wellness. Health coaching is a process through which a coach helps clients set and achieve health-related goals. But is health coaching effective? And are you ready for coaching? In this blog post, we'll explore these questions and more.

Many people are in a bad situation because their lifestyle habits negatively influence their overall health. Some people want to find happiness and want a better life. As the global population ages, the need is for better health.

The principles of health coaching

Online wellness coaching can be applied to any health condition. The health coaching process is based on neuroscience and psychology research demonstrating how people change their habits.

The health coaching process usually starts with assessing the client's current health status, health history, and health goals. From there, the coach works with the client to develop an action plan.

Here is what you need to know about health and wellness coaching

  • All health coaches must be credentialed and highly experienced.

  • Access to health coaches must be convenient, flexible, and secure.

  • Participants will be allowed to work with a single dedicated health coach.

  • Coaching interactions will never conform to a preset agenda or script; rather, coaches are to engage participants in their state of “readiness to change.”

  • Participants will be encouraged to outline their health goals and the steps they feel ready to take in working toward them.

  • Health coaches will function as supportive guides, sources of accountability, and expert resources to direct change and maximize success.

Here is What Health Coaching is Not

We are not dieticians, personal trainers, doctors, or therapists. Health coaching is not a “quick fix” or a fad diet. We are here to help you develop sustainable, healthy habits that lead to lasting change. Research even shows that people's health often gets better with the support of a health coach walking alongside them.

If you're considering health coaching, ask yourself these questions:

-Are you ready to make changes in your health?

-Do you need help setting goals?

-Do you need accountability and support to reach your health goals?

-Do you want to learn more about how to live a healthy lifestyle?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, health coaching might be right for you. Contact a health coach today to start your journey to better health.

Who would not be a good fit for a health coach?

People who are not ready to change their health, do not want to set goals or do not feel they need accountability and support would not be a good fit for health coaching. If you're unsure if health coaching is right for you, contact a health coach today to discuss your specific needs.

Here are three examples of what working with you could look like.

A client who struggles to stick to lifestyle goals

One of my clients, let's call her Sarah, is a busy working mom who struggles to stick to her health and wellness goals. Sarah has tried every fad diet and health trend out there, but she always falls off the wagon after a few weeks. She contacted me because she was ready to make lasting changes in her health. Together, we worked on setting realistic health goals and developing a plan to help Sarah reach those goals. I provided support and accountability for Sarah as she changed her diet and exercise habits. After working with me for several months, Sarah was able to lose weight, increase her energy levels, and improve her overall health.

Individuals working to develop effective stress management techniques

Let's call this client Jacqueline. Jacqueline is a high-powered executive who works long hours and often feels overwhelmed by stress. She contacted me because she was interested in developing more effective stress management techniques. Together, we worked on identifying Jacqueline's stress triggers and developing coping mechanisms to help her deal with them. I also taught Jacqueline some relaxation techniques she could use when feeling overwhelmed. After working with me for several months, Jacqueline was able to reduce her stress levels and improve her work-life balance.

A person who is navigating setting healthy boundaries with work

Maya was working to be assertive and clear with what she needed at work and when she needed to take a step back. After working with a health coach, she communicated better with her boss about setting expectations for deliverables and what time she needed to leave work to avoid burnout. She also felt more confident in saying no to additional assignments that would put her over the edge. As a result of health coaching, Maya set healthier boundaries at work, improving her overall health and well-being.
